Note

Operational scar tissue as an engineering skill

Operational scar tissue is not cynicism. It is memory with enough structure to be useful.

It shows up when a design review asks what happens during a partial rollout, whether a control fails open or closed, whether the dashboard will distinguish abuse from a broken client, and whether the on-call engineer can make a safe decision at 03:00.

The skill is not predicting every failure. It is reducing ambiguity quickly, adding signal where the system is otherwise quiet, and choosing controls that keep producing useful evidence after they meet real traffic.
